Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts Restores Fire Damaged Wood Furniture

You never know when a major disaster such as a fire can strike your home.  Fires can happen very quickly, and they cause immense damage to everything in their path, including your furniture.  It is not only the fire that causes damage as the smoke and soot created by the fire can also cause discoloration, etching, and corrosion.  Wood furniture is especially vulnerable to fire, smoke, and soot as wood is flammable and porous which means it can absorb soot and residue.  If your wood furniture is damaged in a fire, it may be possible to have it restored.

At Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts, we recently had a customer bring us a wooden sideboard and wooden cabinet with a glass door that were each damaged in a fire.  The cabinet had noticeable burn marks in the finish and the sideboard experienced extensive charring and soot.  However, both pieces were structurally intact which made us confident that we could restore the original appearance of the furniture.

Restoring Fire Damaged Sideboard and Cabinet

Both wood furniture pieces came to us significantly damaged by the fire.  The cabinet has some charring marks near the top of the side panels on both sides where the fire burned through the finish.  There was also some charring around the top of the piece and the glass of the cabinet door was tarnished and cracked.  The sideboard was more significantly damaged with extensive charring and soot buildup on the top surface and drawers.  The hardware for the drawers was also heavily tarnished.

Our expert craftsmen got to work removing the charred wood, soot, and residue from both pieces and stripping the finish.  We made sure to remove all of the residue and leftover finish with light sanding and repaired minor surface damage we found in the wood such as stains, scratches, and dents.  We then color matched the wood finish and stain to restore the original appearance of the furniture.

As you can see in the after pictures, the charred wood of the sideboard was replaced, and we finished the piece with a dark wood finish to restore its shine and luster.  The hardware for the drawers was also polished.  For the cabinet, we matched the new finish closely to its original finish and cleaned and repaired the glass on the cabinet door.  Both pieces were returned to the owner in excellent condition with no trace of the damage that was caused by the fire and smoke.

Water Damage

Wood furniture can be affected by water damage if there is flooding in the home or an issue such as a pipe burst or appliance leak that exposes the furniture to water.  If there is a fire, the furniture may experience water damage from putting out the fire.  We can do the following to restore water damaged furniture:

  • Moisture that gets trapped under the wood finish can cause a white cloud effect. We can get under the finish and remove the moisture and the white cloud.
  • We can strip and refinish the furniture if enough moisture has gotten underneath the finish to cause it to separate from the wood.
  • We can repair cracking, splitting, and delaminating that results when the wood absorbs too much water.
  • If composite furniture has become swollen or expanded, we can apply a new veneer.
  • Any water lines can be stained to match the wood stain of the piece.

No matter what type of disaster has affected your furniture, you need to call our professionals at Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts immediately to restore the furniture.
