Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts Helps Refinish Soot Damaged Cabinets

Completing a DIY home project is rewarding because you get to enjoy the improvement to your home that was made possible by your hard work.  When doing a DIY project, it is common to run into unforeseen issues that may complicate the project.  This can be frustrating because it can add time to the project and result in a higher cost.  However, nothing can be more frustrating than having a freak accident that results in a fire ruin the work you put into your home improvement project.

At Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts, we recently had a customer come to us after a fire caused soot damage to their kitchen cabinets just after they had started a DIY project to refinish these cabinets.  The fire left a layer of oily soot on the cabinets that could not be cleaned from the cabinet surfaces.  They reached out to our experts at Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts to completely strip and refinish the kitchen cabinets, including the boxes, frames, doors, and drawers. As furniture refinishing experts, we knew we could effectively strip, sand, stain, and finish the cabinets while leaving no trace of the oily soot.

Stripping and Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

During the past summer, our customer began a DIY project to refinish their kitchen cabinets, including the doors, drawer fronts, and frames.  After a day of staining the cabinets, the customer left the stain towel in a garbage can inside.  The towel caught fire overnight and the smoldering fire left a layer of oily soot all over the kitchen cabinets.  The soot could not be removed by the restoration company, the only option was to completely strip and refinish the cabinets and redo our customer’s work.  Fortunately, the insurance company was willing to pay for the customer to refinish the kitchen cabinets.

In the before pictures, you can see that we started by removing all cabinet doors and drawer fronts and stripping the frames.  We are able to completely strip and sand the cabinets on-site using a Festool HEPA sander that collected most of the dust as it sanded.  The new stain color chosen by the customer was applied by hand to the cabinet frames, doors, and drawer fronts.  The doors and drawers were then taken to our shop so that the satin finish could be applied in the Furniture Medic spray booth.  Once the cabinet doors and drawer fronts were stained and refinished, they were installed in the customer’s kitchen.  You can see the final results and new stain in the after pictures.

During our cabinet refinishing process, the customer and their family were able to stay safely in the home as our sanding process generated very little dust and the water based finishes we use are virtually free of VOCs.

Color Matching for Wood Furniture

One of the great things about wooden furniture is that you can paint it or stain it to match any décor.  At Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts, we offer color matching services in which we will match the original paint color or wood stain of your wood furniture or apply a new paint color or wood stain to change its appearance.  We offer a wide range of paint colors and wood stains to apply to wood furniture of all types.

For this project, the customer chose a dark cherry wood stain for the cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and frames.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing

In the kitchen, the cabinets are important for providing storage space and contributing to the design of the kitchen.  The placement, color, and style of the cabinets all contribute to the overall kitchen design.  When the cabinet doors and drawer fronts become worn out or damaged, it can negatively impact the appearance of your kitchen.

When cabinet doors and drawer fronts experience surface damage, such as scratches, stains, or even oily soot damage, the doors and drawer fronts can be refinished and restored.  This is a less invasive and often less expensive alternative to having the cabinet doors, drawers, frames, and boxes replaced.  Our experts at Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts can completely strip and refinish worn out and damaged kitchen cabinets to restore their appearance.  We will repair scratches and gouges and remove stains and other contaminants like soot residue.  We can complete most of the cabinet refacing and refinishing process on-site as we create little dust in the sanding process and use odorless finishes and stains.

The cabinet refacing and refinishing process includes the following steps:

  • Removing and stripping the cabinet doors and drawer fronts
  • If cabinet doors and drawer fronts are heavily damaged, new doors and drawer fronts will be obtained or fabricated
  • Complete stripping and sanding of the cabinet doors, frames, and drawer fronts
  • Application of new paint or stain by hand with the paint color or wood stain chosen by the customer
  • Application of the water-based factory finish in the Furniture Medic spray booth
  • Installation of newly finished cabinet doors and drawer fronts
